Bordeaux, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Marseille wasted an opportunity to move into third place in Ligue 1 on Sunday after the club suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.

Coming off a 3-2 defeat against Classique rivals Paris Saint-Germain in league play last time out, Marseille hoped to rebound from a poor performance and take three points to remain right in the thick of the title race.

It was a chippy first half with scoring chances hard to come by as the sides went into the intermission still looking to break the deadlock.

The lone goal came just past the hour mark when Cedric Yambere hit the back of the net and Marseille could not find a reply as Bordeaux claimed an important three points.

The result takes Bordeaux to sixth place in Ligue 1 with 54 points, within three of third-place Monaco for a Champions League qualification place, while Marseille remains in fourth spot with 57 points from 32 games played.

Also in the French top flight on Sunday, St. Etienne claimed a 1-0 win over Nantes on the strength of an 18th-minute goal from Franck Tabanou, while Lille topped Evian, 1-0, on a goal by Sofiane Boufal nine minutes from time.

Said Benrahma's fourth-minute strike handed Nice a 1-0 result against Reims, Rennes knocked off Guingamp, 1-0, and Toulouse earned three points with a 1-0 win over Montpellier with a 45th-minute tally by Oscar Trejo

Sunday's final match saw Lens and Lorient play to a scoreless draw.
