SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna assistant football coach Bob Pittello, who spent nearly his entire 52-year career on the sideline at his alma mater and played under Hall of Famer Amos Alonzo Stagg, has died. He was 83.
The school said in a statement that Pittello died Jan. 6 at Pottsville Hospital, where he was being treated for blood clots in his arm. A funeral was scheduled for Thursday.
Pittello was a legendary figure at Division III Susquehanna, where he spent 48 years as an assistant, though not continuously. In his most recent stint, the 2010 season was Pittello's 19th as offensive line coach.
A native of Mount Carmel, Pittello's college playing career began in 1948 at Susquehanna. Stagg and his son, Amos Alonzo Jr., were co-head coaches at the time.
