Toluca missed out on a chance to move to the top of the Mexican Apertura on Saturday as the club sustained a 3-0 defeat at Cruz Azul that drops them one point back of leaders Tijuana.

Toluca entered the weekend level on points with Tijuana and had a game in hand. However, Cruz Azul jumped out to a two-goal lead inside of 35 minutes courtesy of goals from Gerardo Zuniga and Javier Carmona.

Mariano Pavone added a third for the home side 15 minutes from time, moving Cruz Azul to within five points of the top spot.

Tijuana was only able to move one point clear after the team was held to a 1-1 draw at Morelia as Duvier Riascos put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute, only for Miguel Sabah's penalty kick midway through the first half to cancel out the early strike.

Friday's game saw Leon jump to within three points of Tijuana as the club secured a 4-1 win over Jaguares with three unanswered goals over the final 60 minutes after both teams had a player sent off.

Monterrey downed Santos, 3-2, on the strength of second-half goals from Cesar Delgado and Aldo De Nigris, San Luis and Queretaro played to a 0-0 draw and Pachuca used a goal from Raul Torres to notch a 1-0 victory against Tigres.

A stoppage-time tally from Francisco Fonseca helped Atlante to a 2-1 win over Puebla, America downed UNAM, 1-0, with Daniel Montenegro providing the only goal and Guadalajara topped Atlas, 2-0.
