London, England – The first match in charge of Chelsea for Rafael Benitez was far from memorable as the boss watched his side play to a 0-0 draw with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Chelsea was bidding to end a four-game winless streak in the league to remain in the top three, while City, which had won six of its previous seven games, was looking to claim three more points to move back ahead of Manchester United at the top of the table.
Both sides failed to get going in a match played in heavy rain, and scoring chances were few and far between.
The closest that either side came to a goal in the first half was in the 42nd minute when City's Sergio Aguero sent a free header straight at goalkeeper Petr Cech from six yards.
Chelsea was on top in the second half but failed to find a way through as Fernando Torres blazed a shot over the crossbar from inside the penalty area, while City goalkeeper Joe Hart tipped a screaming effort from Ashley Cole over the net.
Swansea City 0, Liverpool 0
Swansea, Wales - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers saw his team claim a 0-0 draw at the home of his former employers, Swansea City, on Sunday.
The result extends Liverpool's unbeaten streak in league play to eight games, but Rodgers probably feels as though his team should have claimed the maximum points.
Jose Enrique had the ball in the net for the Reds in the first half but it was ruled out for a close offside decision, while Raheem Sterling hammered a shot off the crossbar before the break.
Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey had a late opportunity to snatch the win for the visitors, but his effort was kept out by a nice diving stop from Swansea goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel.
Southampton 2, Newcastle 0
Southampton, England - Southampton climbed out of the bottom three on Sunday after securing a 2-0 win over Newcastle at St Mary's Stadium.
A first-half goal from Adam Lallana arrived in the 34th minute when Gaston Ramirez laid the ball off to Lallana to tap in from close range after Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul had stopped a shot from Jason Puncheon.
The Magpies were winless in their last three games but failed to turn things around in the second half as Southampton added another goal on the hour mark through Ramirez, who was on hand to finish off a loose ball in front of the net after Lallana's cross was parried by Krul.
Tottenham 3, West Ham 1
London, England - A goal in each half from Jermain Defoe propelled Tottenham to a much-needed 3-1 win over West Ham at White Hart Lane on Sunday, snapping a run of three successive league defeats for Spurs.
Defoe fired home the opening goal just minutes before halftime with a well- struck shot that keep goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen at his near post.
Gareth Bale doubled the advantage in the 58th minute when he applied the finishing touch to a Clint Dempsey through ball, while Defoe was at it again in the 64th to seal the win.
Aaron Lennon started the move and Defoe notched his seventh goal of the campaign with a right-footed shot to give the Hammers no way back into the game.
The only reply from the visitors came in the last 10 minutes when Andy Carroll scored his first goal of the season with a header from Joey O'Brien's cross.
