Barcelona dropped points in La Liga play for just the third time this season as it was held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia at the Mestalla on Sunday.

The Catalans came into the match having won 19 of its 21 league contests this term and an 11-point lead over second-place Atletico Madrid. That lead has now dwindled to just nine points as Barcelona climbs to 59 points for the season.

The La Liga leaders were on the back foot from the start and paid the price as Valencia grabbed the lead in the 32nd minute. A failed clearance from the Barcelona backline fell to Ever Banega, who took one touch to control before firing a low shot past Victor Valdes at the near post.

It did not take Barcelona long to equalize as Tito Vilanova's side claimed a penalty in the 39th minute when Pedro was impeded in the box. Lionel Messi converted the ensuing attempt for his 33rd league goal of the season.

Valencia looked the more likely side to nab a winner in the second half, but Los Che was lacked the finishing touch necessary to take all three points, leaving the club in sixth place on 34 points for the season.
