VANCOUVER (Reuters) - Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alex Edler will undergo back surgery and be sidelined indefinitely, the NHL team said Thursday.

"After consultation with our physicians it was decided that surgery was the best course of action," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said in a statement.

Edler was Vancouver's top scoring defenseman with 32 points (eight goals, 24 assists) in 49 games. He was injured in Monday's win over Dallas.

The Western Conference-leading Canucks did not say when the surgery would occur.
