Rep. Slaughter: FBI Investigating Vandalism at NY Office, Incident was "Dreadful"

House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., said Wednesday the FBI is investigating recent vandalism at her office in Niagara Falls, adding the incident was “a dreadful thing.”

She noted that the House Sergeant at Arms is briefing her on safety precautions and other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and local police, are looking into the matter.

"I think it's part of a pattern," she told reporters.

"The man doing it said it was because it will prevent civil war," Slaughter said.

The New York lawmaker said she was not concerned about threats to her other offices because they all have security guards.

Reports of vandalism directed at members of Congress and their families has escalated in the last week as the health care debate and votes have been taking place on Capitol Hill, although it was not immediately clear whether the incident at Slaughter's district office was related to the votes in Washington.
