U2 lead singer Bono had a scary landing in Berlin Wednesday when the hatch to his private plane came off during the landing.

Berlin airport spokesman Ralf Kunkel told the Associated Press he was not sure how the hatch came off and that German authorities were investigating the matter. He also said the aircraft was never in danger of crashing.

“He was extremely lucky, the plane could have gone down,” a source close to Bono told the Irish Daily Mail. “About an hour into the journey they heard a big thud coming from the rear of the plane.”

The plane also dropped 8,000-feet during the two-hour ride, the BZ Berlin reported.

Bono and the rest of U2 are slated to perform Thursday at the Bambi Awards, an equivalent to the US Grammy’s.
