The on-again-off-again relationship between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez may be over for good, but Bieber still draws inspiration from his first love.

In fact, Bieber’s next album delves into their messy, yet emotional, romance — though he’s adamant that he will never respond to her hit single “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” which was about their romance. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest this week, Bieber opened up about the relationship.

“A lot of my inspiration comes from her,” Bieber said about his ex. “It was a long relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. There’s a lot of that on this album."

Once Hollywood’s young, “it” couple, the two had a long, drawn-out breakup that transformed their personal life into a very public roller coaster. They began dating in 2010, and broke up three years later.

In an interview with James Franco earlier this year, Gomez said she felt like “the world was against” her and Bieber. While she said she harbors no regrets, she said she learned a lot from the experience.

"I think the next time [I have a boyfriend] will be much different ... which will definitely not be anytime soon," the “Come and Get It” singer said. "That's a growing up kind of thing. I was 18 years old, and it was my first love. The older I get, I'm guarding certain things more."

The highly publicized and rocky relationship seemed to take a personal toll on the two of them.

"There were a few months where I was a little depressed, where I wouldn't leave [my home] as much," Gomez reveals. "I think I drove myself crazy for a little bit. It was just easier to say, 'Hey, do you mind running to the grocery store and picking some stuff up? I don't want to get photographed.'"
