It was recently reported that “more than a quarter of all British women wear a full set of makeup when they visit the gym,” resulting in burning fewer calories. And let’s face it, who wants to look like a sweaty hot mess when you have your favorite lipstick and powder down pat?
But packing on the cosmetic pounds does more harm than good.
“Wearing makeup at the gym is just about the worst thing you can do to your complexion,” says Dr. Ava Shamban, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA. “Combined with oil and perspiration, it creates a pore-plugging sludge that can result in blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, ashiness, and allergies. On the eyelids, unwashed mascaras, shadows and highlighters can plug the pores, creating little cysts called milia. And if you’re working hard, eye makeup can melt into your eyes.”
“When you work out, your sweat glands and pores open up to aid the body in cooling down and releasing heat,” adds Dr. Tony Nakhla, clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California Irvine. “Imagine the cakey, muddy mess that ensures when those pores and sweat ducts are blocked by thick makeup products. The results are breakouts, bumps and blackheads."

“The number one reason to make fall pastels part of your wardrobe? The pale colors soften heavy fabrics and bring femininity back in vogue,” says Emmy Award-winning television host Hilary Kennedy.
And while wearing dreamy colors give ladies the excuse to continue rocking their beloved summer staples before investing in a new fall wardrobe, stylists insist there are specific ways to pull it off in style.

“Leather is not a trend, it’s a staple,” explains Jen Rade, celebrity stylist and designer of Edge by Jen Rade for QVC. “Leather is so versatile, especially now with designers using all weights and colors, as well as adding details, like zippers, buckles, and every shade imaginable. Depending how it’s styled, leather can easily go from tough and edgy to feminine and soft.”
“Leather has been on the runways for a few seasons prior, including spring 2013, which showcased warm weather leathers,” adds celebrity stylist Marcus Stewart. “Now that the climate is shifting, people are finding this seemingly old idea of leather much more approachable.”

There’s a new pant in town, and what we love most about it is that it’s not skinny, denim or primarily made of Lycra. Yes, the culotte pant is many things your leggings aren’t, beginning with sophisticated and ending with slightly androgynous.
Despite its roomy, hangs-like-a-skirt-but-is-actually-pants silhouette, it is tailored, waist defining, and leg-elongating so long as you find the right cut. (The kind that we’re honing in on spans from mid-calf to ankle grazing.)

And whether you’re pairing them with a crop top for a night out on the town or going sleek in the office, they’re a statement-making trouser that’s blithely chic. It’s no wonder the cut was coined by the French.
