A South Carolina college was placed on lockdown for more than three hours Monday evening after an officer-involved shooting ended with one man being killed and another man being taken into custody.
Fox Carolina reported that the shooting happened at approximately 8:45 p.m. EST. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said a campus police officer at Spartanburg Methodist College responded to a report of a car break-in near a residence hall and found two men in a vehicle.
Investigators said one of the suspects was captured after a brief foot chase. The other suspect fled to a vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. SLED spokesman Thom Berry said the officer was struck by the vehicle and responded by opening fire, killing the suspect.
"He did not comply with verbal commands, " Kevin Bobo of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office told WYFF. "He tried to exit the parking lot in a hurry, struck one of the officers with his vehicle and the officer felt in fear and defended himself."
The officer was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The shooting was under investigation.
Bobo told reporters there was never a gunman loose on campus and there is no danger to the school. School officials advised students in statements on Facebook and Twitter to go to their residence halls and stay there until further notice.
The lockdown was lifted at approximately 12:15 a.m. EST, and school officials said classes would operate on a normal schedule Tuesday.
Spartanburg is a town of just under 37,000 people in Upstate South Carolina, approximately 75 miles west of Charlotte, N.C. Spartanburg Methodist College is a private, two-year college with an enrollment of around 800 students.
