Selena Gomez continues to ride the wave to stardom after receiving the ‘Ultimate Choice Award’ at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday.
The 22-year-old singer – the youngest to ever take home the coveted surfboard – used the platform to thank her fans for supporting her during trying times.
“Thank you so much! I have to be honest – especially this month – I cannot thank you guys enough,” said Gomez, who got emotional during the speech. “You remind me, amidst all the stuff what we deal with personally, what’s important, and that’s giving and loving and caring about each other.”
She continued: “I’m not trying to preach or any of that. It’s just that you guys make me better, and I just really appreciate everything that you’ve done.”
The “Come and Get It” singer also thanked her mom for being “the greatest human being in the world.”
“She’s so strong and she’s given up her life for me. She’s so beautiful,” Gomez gushed. “She’s incredible. This never belongs to me. This only goes to you. Thank you for letting me do what I love.”
While Gomez received the night’s top prize, it was actors Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort of “The Fault in Our Stars” that rode with victorious wave Sunday night. They were honored with several prizes, including choice movie lip-lock.
The show was kicked off by Demi Lovato with a performance and a win. After belting out her summer tune “Really Don’t Care,” the singer took home the awards for choice summer song and choice female summer music star.
“I want you guys to know that instead of just getting up here and saying a speech, every single one of you deserves to have happy and incredible life, so be the best you can be in everything because your dreams can come true if you work hard for them,” she said.
Teen Choice Awards co-host Tyler Posey of “Teen Wolf” said 165 million voters were cast online for the 16th annual show, which honors movies, television, comedy, sports, fashion and Web Stars.
Posey – who is part Mexican – had a nice moment on stage with his on-screen mom and “Maid in Manhattan” co-star Jennifer Lopez.
“I know we haven’t seen each other since ‘Maid in Manhattan,’ which was forever ago,” the 22-year-old actor said after giving his former movie mom a hug. “But I thought that maybe if you needed a backup dancer, I’d fit. What do you think?”
Posey then proceeded to show off his movies – shaking his butt and dancing around.
“If I say yes, will you stop?” Lopez joked, who posted a cute picture on Instagram of the pair hanging out backstage.
“Aww look at Ty all grown up!! @i_love_harveys #teenchoiceawards,” she wrote in the caption.
Posey posted the same picture, captioning it: "I can't believe this happened! It's been a long time coming :) @jlo so great seeing you."
Winners on hand to claim their trophies included “The Hunger Games” actor Donald Sutherland, who took home the choice villain surfboard, "Pretty Little Liars" star Lucy Hale as choice drama TV show actress, "The Hunger Games" co-star Josh Hutcherson as choice sci-fi/fantasy movie actor and Bethany Mota and Tyler Oakley as choice female and male Web stars.
"You're all amazing," said Mota, echoing the motivational acceptance speeches from this year's batch of winners. "You all have the potential to be what you wanna be."
Zendaya, Ariana Grande and Kevin Hart were among the other stars who showed up to accept awards at the boisterous ceremony, which featured performances from the groups Magic and Rixton.
"I wish there was a TelePrompTer for these (acceptance) speeches," said "The Giver" actress Odeya Rush, who won the breakout star award.
Jason Derulo closed out the show with a performance of his song "Talk Dirty," which featured the choice male summer music star winner dancing on top of a police car on stage.
