Matt Damon Says He’s Lucky He Fell In Love With A ‘Civilian’

Despite the glitz and the glamour of being an Oscar-winning actor, Matt Damon is thankful his Latina wife helps keep his life relatively normal.

Compared to his fellow A-list friends, Damon said falling for a former bartender, his Argentine-born wife Luciana Barroso, was a blessing.

“I got lucky. I fell in love with a civilian,” Damon said in an interview with Esquire magazine while promoting his upcoming sci-fi film “Elysium.” “Not an actress and not a famous actress at that. Because then the attention doesn't double—it grows exponentially.”

As a father of four, the 42-year-old’s quiet life as a family man also makes him a rather boring target for the paparazzi.

“I don't really give them anything,” Damon said. “They can try to stake me out, but they're always going to get the same story—middle-aged married guy with four kids.”

He said if he’s not going wild in bars, or cheating on his wife, “there's not really any story to tell.”

Damon recognizes how lucky he is compared to many of his celebrity friends.

When he told close pal Brad Pitt, whose fiancé Angelina Jolie has made him part of one of the most famous couples in the world, that he was able to walk his kids to school, “his face just fell. He was very kind, but he was like, 'You bastard.'”

“Because he should be able to do that, too. And he can't,” Damon said.

Earlier this year, Pitt and Jolie helped Damon and his wife renew their vows after eight years of marriage at a lavish party on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

The couple treated themselves to the dream wedding they were not able to have the first time they walked down the aisle.

According to The New York Post, the famous actor and Barroso, who have been married since December 2005, wanted to splurge since their first wedding was a small one.

Their first wedding was an intimate affair where the only non-family member present was New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
