BEIJING – The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has found that Li Xiaolin, daughter of former Chinese Premier Li Peng, held as much as $2.48 million in a secret HSBC bank account in Switzerland.
The ICIJ revelation was gleaned from leaked files dubbed "Swiss Leaks." It adds to the list of families of Chinese senior politicians who amassed huge wealth in the past couple of decades and stashed some of it in overseas accounts that could shield it from detection by authorities back home.
Li Xiaolin is the chairman of a state-owned power utility. Her father is known for his support of the bloody military crackdown on the 1989 democracy movement. Li did not respond to requests by ICIJ for comments, and could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
