Supporters of ex-president Aristide of Haiti gather outside home after court summons issued

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Supporters of former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide have blockaded the street in front of his home amid fears he could face arrest for failing to obey a court summons.

Around 150 supporters of the former president set up barricades of rocks and burning tires Thursday across the normally busy street in front of Aristide's home in the capital. There were no police in sight.

An investigating magistrate issued a summons ordering Aristide to appear in court Wednesday for questioning in a drug-money laundering case in the impoverished Caribbean country.

Aristide lawyer Mario Joseph went to court at the appointed time with a letter explaining that the former president was not properly served with the summons. The judge did not show up but can issue an arrest warrant under Haitian law.
