MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines says it will bring home its peacekeeping forces from the Golan Heights amid the deteriorating security in the region and will withdraw troops from Liberia because of the Ebola outbreak.
Department of National Defense spokesman Peter Paul Galvez said Saturday that the 331 Filipino U.N. peacekeeping troops in Golan would be sent home after their tour of duty ends in October and the 115 peacekeepers in Liberia would be "repatriated as soon as possible."
He said the Philippines "prioritizes the safety and security of its troops, but remains committed to peacekeeping missions of the United Nations."
In March 2013, Syrian rebels seized 21 Filipino peacekeepers and abducted four others two months later, but all were subsequently released.
Galvez said the country's peacekeepers in Haiti would continue their mission.
