JERUSALEM – Israeli police say hundreds of Palestinians threw stones at an Israeli lawmaker as he was visiting a sensitive holy site sacred to both Jews and Muslims but did not injure the legislator.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says officers dispersed the Palestinians and arrested two after the incident on Thursday.
Moshe Feiglin, a nationalist lawmaker and member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party, was visiting the compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism.
To Muslims, it's known as the "Noble Sanctuary" and is Islam's third-holiest site. Israel captured the area from Jordan in the 1967 war.
Earlier this month, Feiglin initiated a parliament debate about Israel extending sovereignty over the site. No decision was made.
