UNITED NATIONS – Diplomats say Nigeria has asked the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions on Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist group responsible for a wave of deadly attacks and the recent abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls.
The diplomats said Tuesday that Nigeria asked the council committee monitoring sanctions against Al Qaeda to add Boko Haram to the list of organizations subject to an arms embargo and asset freeze.
The diplomat said that unless a council member objects by the Thursday afternoon deadline, Boko Haram will be added to the Al Qaeda sanctions list. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Nigeria's request has not been made public.
The Al Qaeda sanctions list currently includes 62 entities and groups, and 213 individuals who are also subject to travel bans.
