LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigerian police say they've arrested a prominent Muslim cleric and four others accused of defacing campaign posters of the president and his running mate in the country's restive northwest.
Federal police spokesman Olusola Amore said Wednesday that Abubakar Jibril was arrested Monday in the city of Sokoto.
Amore said Jibril and four others had painted over President Goodluck Jonathan's posters and "saying all sorts of things to incite the public."
He said they were moved to the capital city of Abuja so local police would not be accused of bias.
The arrest comes ahead of April polls in which Jonathan, a Christian from the south, is running for president even though some northerners believe it is a northerner's turn to rule.
