Police commandos in southern Germany have stormed an apartment after a hostage standoff -- and they've found the bodies of five people, including the gunman.

A spokesman says police were sent in to the apartment after officers smelled smoke, a few hours after the standoff began.

The victims included a court bailiff who was there to evict the man, as well as a locksmith who had accompanied him there and the woman who was supposed to take over the apartment.

Police say the man opened fire when the bailiff and others went there to remove him for failing to pay his rent.
