NASSAU, Bahamas – Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie is seeking to add to his party's big parliamentary majority by winning even in his former rival's district.
Monday's by-election on Abaco island will fill the seat of former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham.
Ingraham stepped down earlier this year after Christie's Progressive Liberal Party swept his Free National Movement from power. Ingraham held the North Abaco seat for 35 years.
Christie says a win in Abaco would be the "icing on the cake" after his party's lopsided victory in May elections. Christie's party controls 29 of 38 parliamentary seats.
The two parties dominate political life in the archipelago off Florida's east coast.
Analysts expect a tight race between ruling party candidate Renardo Curry and the opposition's Greg Gomez.
