Two women have appeared in U.K. court accused of trying to send 20,000 euros ($27,350) to a suspected British jihadi fighting in Syria.

Nawal Masaad, 26, was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport on Jan. 16 as she was preparing to board a flight to Turkey. At the time, officers said they had seized a large quantity of cash.

Her friend, Amal El-Wahabi, 27, was arrested later that day at her home.

The two were charged with arranging funds which "they knew, or had reasonable cause to suspect," would or might be used "for the purposes of terrorism" in relation to Syria.

They were remanded in custody Thursday until a further court hearing Jan. 31.

Western officials have warned that the civil war in Syria is attracting foreign fighters from Europe.
