Sunderland acquired former England defender Wayne Bridge on loan for the rest of the season Tuesday from Premier League leader Manchester City.

Bridge, 31, had played just one game in all competitions for City this season. He joined Manchester in January of 2009, and appeared in 59 matches over three years.

"I'm hoping that with Wayne's undoubted experience and ability he can be a big help to the team until the end of the season," Sunderland coach Martin O'Neill said.

"I'm very pleased to have him here ... I'm sure he'll be a great help to us."

The former Chelsea man made 36 appearances for England from 2002-09, and also played for Southampton, Fulham and West Ham earlier in his career.

Bridge could debut for Sunderland on Wednesday when it hosts Norwich City. The Black Cats are 10th in the standings, one place behind Norwich.
