Horse racing announcer breaks down importance of Belmont Stakes

Sovereignty has collected the final crown jewel of the year, winning the 157th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York on Saturday.
Sovereignty had 2/1 odds to win the race, which was second-best only to Journalism (8/5), the winner of the Preakness Stakes.
But much like how the Kentucky Derby finished, Journalism didn’t have enough down the final stretch, as Sovereignty came racing past to cross the finish line with jockey Junior Alvarado in pure joy.

Baeza, who had 7/2 odds to win the race, finished third.
It was a thrilling race that saw Journalism staying toward the top of the pack on the outside, which is what everyone saw in the first two legs of the Triple Crown this year. He was waiting for the right moment to strike down the stretch.
However, Sovereignty was right behind him, and just as Journalism made the move with a quarter of a mile left in the race, he also charged forward.
It was clear the race was between Sovereignty and Journalism at that point, and the former caught a burst of speed on the straight-away and left everyone else in the dust.

This finish will certainly leave everyone wondering what would’ve happened if Sovereignty ran in the Preakness Stakes, as he won the other two legs of the Triple Crown.
The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Justify in 2018.

This was the second consecutive year the Belmont Stakes weren’t held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, as renovations continue on the historic race course.
