An MRI conducted on Philadelphia Phillies catcher Erik Kratz Monday revealed a medial meniscus tear in the backstop's left knee that will require surgery.

Kratz sustained the injury in the ninth inning of Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers while running past first base on a groundout.

A timetable for recovery will be known after surgery.

The 32-year-old Pennsylvania native is batting .229 with eight home runs and 22 runs batted in through 43 games this season, his fourth in the majors.

The Phillies placed Kratz on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and recalled catcher Steven Lerud from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
