The Devils said on the National Hockey League website (www.nhl.com) they hope Lemaire will remain with the team in some other capacity.

Lemaire, who guided the Devils to their first Stanley Cup in 1995, returned to New Jersey last year after eight seasons coaching the Minnesota Wild.

His second stint in New Jersey ended in disappointment when the second-seeded Devils were brushed aside by the Philadelphia Flyers in five games in the Eastern Conference quarter-finals after finishing the regular season in top spot in the Atlantic Division.
