Kuznetsova wins Moscow opener

Moscow, Russia (SportsNetwork.com) - Former top-five star Svetlana Kuznetsova highlighted Monday's opening-round winners at the Kremlin Cup tennis event.

The eighth-seeded two-time Grand Slam champion drubbed Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 7-5, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at Olympic Stadium.

Also on Day 1, Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova whipped France's Caroline Garcia 6-0, 6-3, Russian wild card Alisa Kleybanova overcame American Varvara Lepchenko 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4, and France's Alize Cornet topped Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-3.

Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who is not defending her title this week, defeated Aussie Samantha Stosur in last year's Moscow finale.

Top seed Angelique Kerber pulled out of the Kremlin Cup draw after titling in Austria over the weekend, citing an abdominal strain. This highest-standing seed in Moscow in No. 2 Roberta Vinci.

The winner of this $797,707 tournament will receive $132,470.
