New York, NY – College basketball coaches Mike Krzyzewski and Pat Summitt have been selected by Sports Illustrated as the magazine's 2011 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
The two own the records for most victories in college basketball, but have done so much more over the course of their brilliant careers.
Krzyzewski, a four-time national champion, reached the Division I men's mark earlier this fall with his 903rd triumph when his Duke Blue Devils beat Michigan State at Madison Square Garden. The historic victory came with former record-holder, Bob Knight, Krzyzewski's former coach and mentor, at courtside.
Summitt, the face of Tennessee women's basketball for 38 seasons, entered this week with 1,075 wins and eight national titles. In August, she revealed a diagnosis of early-onset dementia, but vowed to continue coaching.
Krzyzewski and Summitt join John Wooden and Dean Smith as the only college basketball coaches to win SI's coveted honor.
The award is presented annually to the person or team who transcended the year in both athletic performance and character.
Last year's winner was New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
