Edna Kiplagat of Kenya won the women's marathon and countrymate V.J. Cheruiyot captured the women's 10,000 meters to highlight the opening day of the 2011 IAAF World Championships.

Not only did the Kenyan women win both gold medal events on the day's schedule, the countywomen swept the podium entirely.

Kiplagat, who won last year's New York Marathon, finished Saturday in a time of two hours, 28 minutes and 43 seconds, beating fellow Kenyan Priscah Jeptoo by 17 seconds. Kenyan Sharon Cherop was third, another 14 seconds off the pace.

Cheruiyot completed the 10,000 meters in 30 minutes and 48.98 seconds, more than a second in front of countrymate Sally Kipyego. Defending champion Linet Masai of Kenya was third, followed by still another Kenyan, P.J. Cherono.
