Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New Jersey Devils provided some long- term stability in their crease on Wednesday, signing goaltender Cory Schneider to a multi-year contract extension.
No terms were disclosed by the club, but the Star-Ledger reports it's a seven- year pact worth $42 million. Schneider will earn $4 million on the final year of his current deal.
The deal was the final indication that Martin Brodeur's days with the franchise have come to a close.
"With today���s signing, we have solidified our goaltending for the present and the future," said Devils GM Lou Lamoriello. "Cory demonstrated throughout the year what he could bring to our organization, both on and off the ice."
The 28-year-old finished last season with a 16-15-12 record, 1.97 goals- against average and three shutouts over a career-high 45 appearances for New Jersey.
A native of the Boston suburbs and Boston College product, Schneider has logged 143 games of NHL experience for the Canucks and Devils since 2008, holding a 71-41-20 mark, 2.12 GAA and 12 whitewashes.
With veteran backstop Scott Clemmensen already signed, New Jersey has a pair of former B.C. Eagles stopping pucks. Clemmensen won a national title in 2001, while Schneider appeared in two national championship games (2006, '07) for the program.
