BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Bruins have signed forward Shawn Thornton to a two-year contract extension.

The team announced the deal Friday, but did not release financial terms.

The 32-year-old Thornton had a goal, nine assists and a career-high 141 penalty minutes in 74 games in 2009-10, his third season with the Bruins. He could have become a free agent on July 1.

Thornton's 21 fighting majors led the team and tied for fifth in the NHL.

Thornton has also played for the Chicago Black Hawks and the Anaheim Ducks.
