First Person to be Openly Gay and Elected to Congress Reacts to High Court's DADT Ruling

Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., the first person to be openly gay and then elected to Congress, reacted to Friday's Supreme Court ruling that a controversial law banning gays serving openly can stay intact while a ruling overturning it is under appeal.

The House voted over the summer to repeal DADT decision.

Here is Polis' statement:

"Don't ask Don't tell is going to end, either judicially or legislatively, and it is better if we do it legislatively so that the military is part of the planning process.

The sooner that we can accomplish ending the policy, the better. The uncertainty around the policy is making it increasingly difficult for gays and lesbians in the military. Their heads are spinning about whether others finding out about their personal lives outside of work hours is grounds for dismissal or not.

While I'm disappointed with the Supreme Court's decision today, the silver lining is that it gives Congress another chance to change the policy in an orderly way that incorporates the concerns of the military."
