While cities across the country reacted violently on the Ferguson grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer who killed a black 18-year-old Michael Brown, social media erupted in its own way, quiet yet powerful and loud, with many celebrities taking to Twitter and other outlets to comment on the decision.
Actress Rosie Perez, who had previously retweeted several stories regarding the jury’s decision, wrote: “Wow. #NoIndictment… A civil probe of discriminatory policing remains active - #justsaying. Thoughts are with all #Ferguson. #NoViolence pls!”
Charlie Sheen had strong words for Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot Brown on August 9.
“Officer Wilson, You are a murderer. Shame on you. Parents are NOT supposed to bury their children. You think about that…” he tweeted, adding the hastag #Losing.
“Furious 7” actress Michelle Rodriguez tweeted: “I had a friend get killed by cops, brushed under rug I’m at least happy unjustified murder by police is getting media attention for once…”
“Hoping for change, stereotypes and statistical profiling claims too many innocent lives my hearts with the protestors I pray for change,” she continued. “Protestors please remember that you cant act like animals and expect to be treated like civilized citizens learn from 1992 Rodney King riots.”
Before the jury’s decision was announced, actor Edward James Olmos tweeted: “They're about to announce the grand jury decision on Michael Brown. Remember. Non violent social disobedience is the key. #sosayweall.”
He followed that up with another tweet reminding protestors: “NON VIOLENT SOCIAL DISOBEDIENCE!!!!!!”
"Red Band Society" actor Wilson Cruz tweeted a quote by late author James Baldwin.
“Hatred, which could destroy so much, never failed to destroy the man who hated, and this was an immutable law,” he wrote with the hashtag #Ferguson.
