A snake as long as a car was spotted feasting on an animal believed to be a beaver on a riverbank in Westbrook, Maine early Wednesday, according to police who warned people in the area to watch out.
Officers said this was no joke. Kids would frequently visit that section of the Presumpscot River to swim and feed ducks. Investigators said the snake was at least 10 feet long.
Still, social media had fun with the sighting, giving the reptile nicknames like "Wessie" and the "Presumpscot Python." Somebody started a Twitter account under the name Wessie P. Thon.
After two officers arrived on the scene, police said the snake finished its meal and swam across the river to the Brown Street side before disappearing.
Maine Warden Service officials said the snake was expected to stay put and rest for a couple days since it just chowed down on a large mammal.
One person who lived in the area had reported a snake sighting last week -- and many residents are now taking it seriously, WGME reported.

Westbrook is a 20-minute drive west of Portland.
