SAN FRANCISCO – The archbishop of San Francisco has sent a letter to California lawmakers asking them to respect his right to hire people who uphold Catholic teachings.
Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone asks state lawmakers in a letter Thursday if they would hire a campaign manager who advocates policies contrary to those they stand for. He tells them he respects their right to hire whoever may advance their mission and that he is asking for the same respect.
Cordilone wrote the message in response to a letter this week from California lawmakers urging him to remove from a teachers' handbook morality clauses they say are discriminatory and divisive.
The archbishop says the statement outlines to Catholic school employees that they are expected to conduct their public lives in a way that doesn't undermine church doctrine.
