A case of contaminated beef at a Florida Walmart has really “tripped” up police. Months after an incident in which an LSD-laced piece of steak sent a family to the hospital, cops in Tampa Bay are still no closer to figuring out how the hallucinogenic drug ended up in the meat.
Ronnie Morales, his pregnant girlfriend Jessica Rosado and her two daughters Elyana, 7, and Rayna, 6, were rushed to St Joseph's Hospital in Tampa back in March after eating the LSD-contaminated meat. Rosado, who was nine months pregnant, started getting sick and after being admitted to the hospital doctors induced labor.
Back at home, Rosado's 6- and 7-year-old daughters began experiencing hallucinations.
Morales and the two children were released from the hospital in good condition soon after their bad trip died down. Rosado and the healthy new baby boy were released the following day.
While Tampa police admitted that the investigation has been a long, strange trip, they also said that they are no closer to solving how the drug got into the meat and have decided to close investigation.
"It is a mystery," Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis told the Tampa Bay Times. "And it will probably always remain a mystery.”
During the investigation investigators spoke with representatives from Cargill, the company that produced the meat, and discovered that the meat was slaughtered at Newnan, Ga before being shipped in a sealed container to a distribution facility. The investigation concluded that there were no signs of tampering between the meat leaving the distribution facility to it making it on the shelf at Walmart.
The family, which was visiting Florida from Connecticut to decide if they wanted to move there, soon returned back north following the LSD incident.
"All of the victims recovered completely and none are suffering any adverse effects from the LSD exposure," Detective Rachel Cholnik wrote in a report. "There is no further investigation at this time."
