Jonas Hector scored the winning penalty as Germany beat Italy 6-5 in a penalty shootout to reach the semifinals of the European Championship.
Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had saved Matteo Darmian's spot kick moments before as the shootout went to 'sudden death.'
Neither side could score in extra time after drawing 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes of their quarterfinal match in Bordeaux.
Leonardo Bonucci converted a penalty in the 78th minute to bring Italy level after Jerome Boateng handled a flicked header by Giorgio Chiellini in the area.
Mesut Ozil had given Germany the lead in the 65th, racing onto a deflected cross to steer in from eight meters.
The match had been a tactical stalemate until Ozil's goal, with defenses on top and neither goalkeeper seriously tested.
Germany advances to a semifinal against France or Iceland in Marseille on Thursday.
It was Germany's first ever competitive win over Italy.

Germany and Italy are drawing 0-0 at halftime in a cagey, tactical match in their quarterfinal in Bordeaux.
Germany had most of the possession but was stifled by Italy's defense. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in the first 45 minutes.
Thomas Mueller had the best chance of the first period but his 42nd minute shot lacked power and was easily saved by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Soon after, Stefano Sturaro also had a shot from the edge of the penalty area for Italy but his shot was deflected wide.
Germany midfielder Sami Khedira was taken off in the 15th minute for an apparent left thigh injury, and was replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger
The winner will play France or Iceland in the semifinals.

Wales' 3-1 victory Belgium has redoubled Iceland's belief that it can beat France and advance to the semifinals of Euro 2016.
"It is a joy to watch and I think Wales are a force to be reckoned with," Iceland captain Aron Gunnarsson said Saturday. "They have got a good squad, good players and a tough togetherness.
"I think they're showing great attitude and desire to win football matches. It is something we can definitely learn from. I think we are quite similar to them, especially in that direction."
Iceland takes on the host in the Stade de France on Sunday, and co-coach Lars Lagerback described a motivational image he showed to his team.
"It was a road that has two directions," Lagerback said. "One is going home and one is going towards Marseille."
That's the southern French city where Iceland would play Germany or Italy in the semifinals if it beats France.

Midfielder Stefano Sturaro has replaced Daniele De Rossi in Italy's starting lineup for the team's quarterfinal against Germany in Bordeaux.
De Rossi injured his thigh in Italy's 2-0 win over Spain in the round of 16. It's unclear whether De Rossi will be available to come on from the bench.
That's the only change announced by Italy coach Antonio Conte.
His counterpart for Germany, Joachim Loew, has also made one change from the side that defeated Slovakia 3-0 in the round of 16, with right back Benedikt Hoewedes coming in for Julian Draxler, who failed to keep his place despite his man-of-the-match performance in the previous game.
Makeshift defender Joshua Kimmich keeps his place, suggesting Loew is employing the three-at-the-back strategy that served him to good effect in the 4-1 friendly win over Italy in Munich in March.
Germany is aiming for its first win over Italy at a major tournament.

UEFA has agreed to a request by the Italian soccer federation for its players to wear black armbands in their quarterfinal against Germany on Saturday.
The gesture pays tribute to Italian victims of an attack in Bangladesh which began late Friday.
At least 20 people were killed after dozens of people were taken hostage at a restaurant in the diplomatic zone of Bangladesh's capital city Dhaka.
Security forces stormed the restaurant early Saturday to end a 10-hour standoff with militants.
Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi says there are Italian victims, though he did not give details.
Italy plays Germany at Bordeaux.

France coach Didier Deschamps has a dilemma in defense for the quarterfinal against Iceland on Sunday. With Adil Rami suspended, he must pick either untested Samuel Umtiti or the out of form Eliaquim Mangala to partner Laurent Koscielny at center half.
Umtiti has never played for France, while Mangala did not feature in any pre-tournament warmup matches.
"They have two tall strikers who have a lot of presence, they are athletic and strong," Deschamps said of Iceland. "I can't make my players taller by adding a few centimeters. It's a question of being strong in the challenges and paying close attention to the second ball."
At 1.88 meters (6-foot-2) and weighing 84 kilograms (185 pounds), Mangala is taller and stronger than Umtiti — who is 1.80 meters (5-foot-11) and weighs nearly 10 kilograms (22 pounds) less.
