HARRISBURG, Pa. – Plans are underway to convert vacant school buildings in Harrisburg into low-cost housing for seniors.
The Hamilton School was shut down in June 2011 because of budget woes.
WHTM-TV (http://bit.ly/15zSQsn) said school district official Gene Veno discussed plans Wednesday to convert Hamilton's classrooms into 37 two-bedroom and studio apartments in the heart of Harrisburg's revitalization district for people age 62 and older.
Hamilton is one of five vacant schools in the district.
A joint effort between the district, city, Summa Development and Pennsylvania Development Corp. would tackle the project named Hamilton Apartments.
Veno said it's a for-profit venue that could make money for Harrisburg schools.
He will discuss the plans Thursday evening before City Council, which must give its approval before the properties can be developed.
