Pereira completes unlikely title run in Bogota

Bogota, Colombia ( - Teliana Pereira completed an unlikely run to her first career WTA title, beating Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets on Sunday in the Claro Open final.

Pereira battled through a tough first set before rolling in the second to earn a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory, becoming the first Brazilian to win a WTA singles title since Neige Dias at Barcelona in April of 1988.

Ranked 130th in the world, the 26-year-old Pereira didn't drop a set this week. She beat former Grand Slam champion Francesca Schiavone in the first round, knocked out two-time Bogota champion Lourdes Dominguez Lino in the quarterfinals and took out the top-seeded Elina Svitolina in the semis.

Shvedova, seeded fifth this week, was in her second career final and trying for her second title. The native of Kazakhstan won her first title eight years ago in Bangalore.
