There aren't too many positives the Boston Red Sox can take from their nine-game trip out west.

Dustin Pedroia may have a valid argument against that and will try to extend his hitting streak to 16 games Wednesday in the rubber match of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Pedroia, the 2008 AL MVP, is batting .393 with two homers, eight RBI, 11 runs and a .456 on-base percentage. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 4-3 win, helping the Red Sox end a season-high seven-game losing streak.

Cody Ross hit a three-run homer and Ryan Lavarnway belted a solo shot during a four-run sixth inning for the Red Sox, who are 1-7 on the road trip and have been outscored by a 61-20 margin during the trek.

Red Sox starter Jon Lester lasted six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks for the win. Andrew Bailey was the fourth reliever used and picked up his second save in a scoreless ninth inning.

"The guys looked happy after the game," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "It's great to see them with smiles. Coming from behind, getting Jon Lester a win, two home runs in an inning and a three-run shot... it was a good win."

Boston ended an eight-game slide on the road and will return to Fenway Park to start a six-game homestand versus the rival Blue Jays and Yankees.

Aaron Cook will try to pitch the Red Sox to a series win tonight, but is only 1-7 with a 5.67 earned run average in his last 10 starts. Boston is 2-8 in that time and didn't do much in his last start, a 20-2 setback at Oakland on Friday in which he gave up six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Cook, a right-hander, is 3-8 with a 5.35 ERA in 13 starts this season and had his best outing of the year at Seattle on June 29. He tossed a two-hitter that day and fanned a pair of batters with no walks. It was his first career meeting with the Mariners. Cook is 1-4 in five road assignments this season.

Seattle had won two straight and five of eight games before last night's loss.

Blake Beavan was victimized by that rough sixth inning and lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits with one strikeout and no walks.

"It looked like his ball flattened out and he was missing in the middle of the plate. It happened in a hurry so we had to get him out of there. He was throwing the ball down and his breaking ball was good prior to that but he just wasn't the same guy that inning," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of Beavan's sixth inning.

Franklin Gutierrez and Kyle Seager both homered and Jesus Montero finished with three hits in the loss.

The Mariners are 2-3 on a nine-game homestand and will entertain Oakland for three games over the weekend.

Kevin Millwood is 0-4 in his last six starts and 1-8 with a 4.77 earned run average in his last 17. Seattle is 5-12 in that time and will hand the veteran right-hander the ball tonight. In a 9-1 loss to the LA Angels of Anaheim, Millwood gave up five runs, four of which were earned, and nine hits over five innings to fall to 4-12 in 26 starts with a 4.38 ERA.

Millwood is 6-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 17 career starts against the Red Sox.

Boston has won five of eight matchups with Seattle this season.
