Opened in 2009, Donbass Arena cost $416.5 million to build and was funded by Shakhtar Donetsk owner Rinat Akhmetov. Shakhtar, one of the best club's in Ukraine, plays in the stadium, which features an illuminated exterior shell.
Shakhtar spent the previous 68 years playing at Shakhtar Stadium, which still remains as the residence for Shakhtar's reserve side and FC Metalurh Donetsk, another Ukraine club.
Donbass Arena opened with a Beyonce concert in August 2009, and the inaugural soccer match was played two months later between Shakhtar and FC Obolon Kyiv, with the hosts posting a 4-0 win.
The stadium will host five Euro 2012 games, including two featuring co-host Ukraine, two for 1966 World Cup champion England, and one for 1998 World Cup champion and Euro 2000 champion France. A quarterfinal match and a semifinal game will also be played at the venue.
