After winning once last season, Kansas football has lofty goals in Year 2 under Charlie Weis

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas coach Charlie Weis hopes another high-profile transfer at quarterback can help lead Kansas to success after a dismal first season in charge.

Weis plans to put former BYU quarterback Jake Heaps under center when the Jayhawks open the season Sept. 7 against South Dakota. He'll take over for former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist, who struggled so much during a 1-11 season a year ago that he was benched.

Weis has rebuilt the rest of the roster, too, using an influx of junior college players to shore up positions on both sides of the ball. Six of them appeared as starters on the initial depth chart, not counting those fighting for special teams jobs.

They'll try to help the Jayhawks snap the 11-game skid they carry into this season.
