Starting Wednesday, visitors may take pictures and post to social media while touring the White House, ending a ban that spanned more than 40 years.

"Visitors are also encouraged to share their experience using the hashtag #WhiteHouseTour," the White House stated in lifting the ban.

Flash photography is still not allowed. Video cameras and most camera equipment, such as certain lenses and stands, are still prohibited, as are camera sticks and tablets.

The White House took to social media to make the announcement, choosing a picture of first lady Michelle Obama tearing the "no photos or social media" sign to post on Instagram.
