BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. – A nurse working in Colorado has surrendered to the Summit County sheriff after a powerful painkiller was found in her system and a warrant was issued accusing her of stealing drugs from a hospital.
In a statement, District Attorney Bruce Brown says 47-year-old Kimberly Jean Burgans surrendered Saturday. An investigation was begun after St. Anthony Summit Medical Center officials called a sheriff’s deputy to report the results of a drug test showing fentanyl in Burgans’s system. Burgans did not have a prescription for the synthetic opiate that is more potent than morphine.
Suzanne Lifgren, who is the hospital’s marketing manager, says Burgans was fired Jan. 27 and that the state nursing board and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency also were notified. Hospital officials do not believe Burgans put patients at risk.
