A man in the U.K. knew that there was no time to talk when he saw another man collapse at a gas station on Sunday.
Bob Attewell was pumping air into his tires when he witnessed Jimmy Smith, who was in cardiac arrest, hit the ground. Armed with the lyrics of the Bee Gees’ classic “Stayin’ Alive,” Attewell, 67, quickly hurried over to the Smith and began administering CPR.
“I ran over to him and the first thing I thought was ‘he’s dead,’” Attewell, of Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, told SWNS. “He was absolutely blue, not breathing at all. There was no signs of life.”

Attewell worked on Smith, who is father-in-law to Scottish soccer star Paul Gallagher, for about 20 minutes while paramedics were called to the scene, using the training he had received with the Lake District Mountain Rescue Team.
Part of the training, Attewell said, was to keep pace with the beat of the Bee Gees hit classic, “Stayin’ Alive.”
“I got him into position and began with the chest compressions to keep his heart going,” Attewell told SWNS. “His heart had completely stopped. But I remembered my training and I just decided to keep it up until the ambulance came.”

“It might sound silly, but I was singing ‘Stayin’ Alive’ in my head the whole time I was administering the CPR. It did the trick,” he told SWNS.

Smith’s son-in-law later took to Twitter to update his followers on his father-in-law’s condition, as well as ask for help in tracking down Attewell.
“My father in law is still in a critical condition and being monitored in intensive care but is currently breathing and we’re taking it hour by hour,” Gallagher’s tweet, in part, read. “I still played today because that’s what Jimmy would always want with his ‘get on with it/run it off’ attitude.”
A later tweet from Gallagher’s account said they had been able to locate Attewell.
