Shanda Flemming thought she was signing a permission slip for her son to get a routine dental cleaning at school, but was shocked when he came home missing three teeth.
“I’m angry about this. I don’t think that it should have happened like that,” Flemming, of Baltimore, Maryland, told WJZ.
Her 9-year-old son, Michael, is missing two teeth on one side and one on the bottom. Flemming claims she was not notified by the elementary school about the procedures, which were done by a dental program visiting the school.
According to WJZ, school dental programs became more common after a Prince George’s County boy died from an infected tooth in 2007. Baltimore Public Schools declined the news station’s request for comment, citing HIPPA and privacy concerns
The procedure caused the third grader to miss the bus and he had to walk almost a mile to get home. WJZ did not specify what date the incident occurred, but reported that Michael had an appointment with a family dentist scheduled for Jan. 23.
“I just don’t understand how a school or a company can take it in their hands to do something like this to a child,” Flemming told WJZ.
