HBO will offer a stand-alone streaming service beginning in 2015, the network announced Wednesday.
"That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped," HBO CEO Richard Plepler told investors in New York. "It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO."
With growing competition from services like Netflix, HBO has decided to make its content available to consumers without requiring them to pay for a subscription to its pay cable channel. Plepler outlined three ways the company is considering distributing content online: selling it through existing cable providers, distributing it through partners like Amazon or Google, or launching a new service modeled on Netflix.
