A text message sent by Mel Gibson to his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in which he allegedly admitted he "wasn't safe for you" has become key evidence in the domestic violence dispute involving the actor, the New York Post reported Thursday.

"Oksana, I wasn't safe for you last night," Gibson wrote following a January 6 dust-up, according to entertainment website RadarOnline.

The "Lethal Weapon" star sent the text the day after he allegedly punched Grigorieva in the head and tried to choke her while she was holding their two-month-old baby, Lucia.

"I spent two hours with a therapist today and have regained some perspective. What I'm telling you know is I am safe & would like to come by and make amends to you, Sascha and Lucia. I won't stay, just let you say your peace and I'll say mine," Gibson also wrote, according to RadarOnline.

Sascha, whose birth father is James Bond actor Timothy Dalton, is Grigorieva’s 12-year-old son.

Gibson, 54, and Grigorieva, 40, are locked in a bitter feud over custody and support for their infant daughter.

Gibson's lawyers have denied he ever hit Grigorieva and have claimed the Russian-born musician has tried to extort the Oscar-winning actor.

But Gibson has boasted that he could slap her around with impunity because "no one will believe you," he ranted during a series of recordings made public recently.
