Move over Scarlett Johansson – there is a new “Sexiest Woman Alive.”
Spanish bombshell Penelope Cruz inherited the title handed out by Esquire magazine. If the November issue’s cover is anything to go by, Cruz is definitely living up to her new title.
The 40-year-old, who has two children with husband Javier Bardem, slipped into a plunging black bathing suit for the magazine’s cover. She admitted to the magazine that she once held a dubious title: drama queen.
“I’ve played a lot of tricks on myself. I’ve made it hard for me sometimes, especially in my teens and twenties,” Cruz told the magazine. "I had an attraction to drama … (but) I could not be less interested now.”
The star of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” – which coincidentally costarred Bardem and the 2013 Sexiest Woman Alive, Johansson – remained tight-lipped about her four-year marriage to Bardem and their kids, daughter Luna and son Leonardo. “That is for us,” Cruz explained.
The actress has a couple of movies coming out soon, including “Grimsby,” which costars Sacha Baron Cohen, and a Spanish-language film “Ma Ma,” about which she would only tell the magazine that her character suffers from an unspecified illness.
According to Esquire, the actress requested she not be asked about her highly controversial signing of an open letter condemning Israel’s bombing of Gaza, saying that the statement released by her publicist was her “final word on the subject.”
“After more than two decades of public life, Cruz has managed to remain a mystery,” the magazine writes. “It’s as though she wants us to decide who she really is, and she can be whatever we want her to be.”
The November issue of Esquire hits newsstands Oct. 21.
