October 19, 2015 Office Survival Guide The average American works a 9 to 6 job, thus eating majority of their meals at the office. According to Australian researchers, work places have contributed significantly to the accelerating obesity rate over the past few years. It's easy to toil through a day of meetings, phone calls, and e-mails to discover at 4 p.m. that you haven't eaten since breakfast, sending your body into starvation mode and causing you to make poor food decisions. The office doesn't have to be a danger zone. Making sure to keep healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks on hand will allow you to avoid making poor food choices.
October 19, 2015 Food Allergy Awareness Are food allergies really on the rise? Well it is estimated that up to 6 percent of young children and 3-4 percent of adults in our country have food allergies. There are recent studies looking at a rise in the prevalence of food allergies over the past several decades. In fact, the rate of peanut allergy doubled in children over a five year period. In one study, only half the adults affected with severe food-allergic reactions sought any evaluation of this condition by a medical professional.
October 19, 2015 Parental "Covert Control" Childhood obesity numbers have prompted researchers to look at the effect of parental control on children's eating behaviors. Parents who are concerned about their child's weight may use controlling or restrictive feeding practices in an effort to help limit their child's intake. This restriction tends to therefore backfire as children of restrictive parents are associated with having higher caloric intake and a greater likelihood to eat when they are not hungry. The real issue is that if Mom or Dad does all the work in feeding practices- chooses foods, portions sizes, when, where, etc., then they may undermine the child's development of self-regulatory competence. If controlling habits diminish self-regulatory ability, then of course the likelihood of overeating, obesity, etc. are much higher.
October 19, 2015 Where Dining Out Meets Eating In I've been getting lots of questions lately about the healthy-on-the-go meal delivery services that seem to be popping up in neighborhoods across the country. The meals are as convenient as a TV dinner, but are prepared down the road and often without the additives or preservatives or other -"ives" that tend to be in their freezer section counterparts. October 19, 2015 Can Vitamin D Improve Lung Function, in Asthma? Asthma researchers have conducted a recent review on literature of over five decades on the relationship of vitamin D and asthma. The evidence appears to suggest that vitamin D deficiency can be associated with lower functioning of the lungs and worse asthma control. Vitamin D deficiency can be quite common and in some studies it has been estimated to be present in more than one third of children and adolescents in the US. Vitamin D deficiency is more common in westernized countries, in obese individuals and in those of African American ethnicity.
